July 1 am - Day 3 in ICU

Erin continued to do well throughout the night without any supplemental oxygen. To go home, her oxygen saturation level needs to stay above the low 80's. While on oxygen, it was continuously around the 95 level. After going to dinner last night and returning, I was thrilled to see that it was still at 95 without any supplemental oxygen. Today, when I arrived this am, it was at 95. As a result, the Dr's made the decision to stop her prostaglandins. If her oxygen levels stay high without the drug, then she can come home.

In conferring with the attending, he indicated that they will review her progress again later today, and perhaps she can begin eating tomorrow. She has been fed intravenously since birth. If all continues to go well, perhaps she can come home as early as sometime next week.

Last night, she opened her eyes for the first time since just after birth. We spent 10 minutes staring at each other while she sucked on her pacifier. Pretty amazing stuff. Funny how we work so hard to make life so grand, and then find that the best things of all are the simplest. Impossible to understand until you experience it first hand.

Dear Jim and Sheila,
Joe sent me the news and the blog. I am delighted to congratulate you on your new daughter. Erin is beautiful. What a delightful morsel to love, cherish, and spoil. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Erin. I know Mike is looking out for her too.
